CRYSTAL RIVER FLORIDA
Where Man and Manatee Play |
 |
Description of Crystal River:
Just one hour north of Tampa, Florida, is Crystal River, located near an extensive system of freshwater springs feeding the river system, called by most the jewel of the Florida Nature Coast. With a estimated population in July 2005 of 3,600, this city of hospitality offers "Old Florida" charm. Crystal clear springs with varieties of both salt water and fresh water creatures attract scuba divers and snorkelers alike. The constant feed of freshwater at a constant 68-72F(20-22C)from the springs means excellent visibility and the safe clear, cool, calm waters makes Crystal River the most preferred dive training area in Florida.

Facts About Diving or Snorkeling at Crystal River Springs:
Crystal River is well known for it's West Indian Manatee abundance in the winter. On a given weekend, you can practically walk across the water on the backs of snorkelers without getting your feet wet. There are often open water class doing their check out dives in the springs in the mornings. The best time to get there to see the manatees is day break or even before 7 o'clock in the morning. There are numerous springs in the area, but Tarpon Springs (aka King's Spring) is usually the most popular for divers and snorkelers. If you really want to see the manatees without the crowds, Aquatic Obsessions suggest trying one of the other springs. A great resource for manatee information is the Save The Manatees website. This site contains a lot of information including applicable states laws regarding how you may interact with them as well as an underwater camera at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park.
